A Change Is A Good As A Holiday!
March 24th, 2006
Well, its official. After crafting and editing and proof-reading my resume, I’ve finally submitted my life for a position on the Coast. The position will suit my leadership qualities: Station Manager. The station I’m vying for has approximately 23 officers and runs 24/7 365 days of the year. Where I’m currently stationed, we have 5 officers and we work 9 - 1900hr shifts in 8 day blocks, with on-call duties from 1900 - 0900 the following morning then 6 days off, 365 days of the year.
The move will be good for me. I’ve spent nearly three years working in Rural NSW, Australia and I’ve enjoyed every moment of it. The type of work in country NSW is far superior to the seemingly endless cases generated in metropolitan Sydney, although at a slightly decreased rate. And, apart from workload, the lifestyle is incredible. Community is important to me; I like knowing my neighbours. I like knowing that my neighbours also know my daughter.
That’s what’s so great about small country towns. Everyone knows everyone, and the level of expectation to keep to the law, or even render assistance to those in need is high. In a small country town that person “snoozing” in the gutter could well be your best friend, whereas the odds of knowing that same “sleeping” individual in bigger cities is potentially zero.
The Station in which I’ve applied currently deals with (approx) 400 - 500 Triple 000 calls per month. It’s a far cry from my current workload: 30 - 70 jobs per month. The good thing about the increased workload is that I’m not wholly responsible for attending them all. Yeah, I know; it was a shock to me too!
So now its just a matter of waiting to see if my application was up to snuff. My previous experience will hold me in good stead; I’ve accrued (5) degrees and I also possess 14+ years managerial experience. So my chances of moving into the next stage are pretty good.
Now its just a matter of waiting for the closing date, which is 2 weeks after “open” publication. From there, its a 2 - 4 day wait for that all important phone call. I’ll know if I missed the cut by Friday (5 days after closing date). Naturally I’ll keep you posted on my progress.
