Ten Things To Do Before I Die
September 20th, 2006
After the stunning death of Steve Irwin - Crikey, Mate! - The Crocodile Hunter, I could not help but reflected upon what I’ve achieved in my life. I didn’t know Steve personally or professionally, either, but he was an Australian Mate, balls to bones and his sudden death left me reeling. Not surprisingly, I wasn’t the only one.
When I heard the news that The Croc Hunter had been killed filming Sting Rays off the Great Barrier Reef, everyone at my station - in my community was talking about it. His worth speaks for itself, when everyday Aussies are immediately affected by his tragic death. Those who scoff and say Irwin Brought It Upon Himself seriously need to examine their own behaviour, and their capacity to live and love. He was a Great Man - and a passionate conservationist. No one could doubt his sincerity or his love.
Death is not a return trip, and one’s sense of mortality seems to hammer home when someone you think you know suddenly dies. Princess Di was such a woman. I wasn’t merely shocked at her death; I was wounded. And now Steve Irwin - the Crocodile Hunter. The Most Passionate Man to ever walk this green earth. As sad as it sounds, the Grim Reaper has been greedy this year: Friday 8th September 2006, Aussie Super V8 Legend, Peter Brock joined fellow Australian Steven Irwin. Brock was famous, world wide and his cool, calm, highly professional - and let’s not forget freakishly clever - V8 racing skills put Bathurst 1000 and Australia on the global Map.
And on September 8th, in a freak rally car accident (irony, at its worst!), Brocky’s life is no more. Makes one sit up and take notice, doesn’t it? No one’s immortal. Not beautiful Di. Not The Croc Hunter. And not, apparently, Super V8 Legend Peter Brock. We’ll miss you boys, heaps.
So here are my ten things I want to do before I die.
- Send manuscript to publisher
- Sign a Five Stage Romance Book deal
- Overcome my crippling fear of being eaten alive by Sharks
- Spend 6 months touring England and the grand country estates
- Get my motorcycle licence
- Learn French - my mother speaks it so randomly nowadays
- Hold my first grandchild in my arms
- Walk the Kokoda Trail
- Learn to scuba-dive
- Retire near the beach and write every day (see #2)

A deadline often moves people to action. A reminder that we are all mortal and will die some day (with a list of things to do before you die) really changes your perspective on life, and what to spend your time on.
